LOCAL FARMERS HONORED FOR CONSERVATION EFFORTS
Each year, the West Otter Tail Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) recognizes individuals or organizations for outstanding accomplishments in implementing conservation practices that improve and protect Otter Tail County’s natural resources. This year’s Outstanding Conservationist is Don and Lori Viger of Fergus Falls. The Vigers operate a grain farm south of Fergus Falls, raising corn, wheat, and soybeans. Don has been farming for 31 years, and still operates on the family farm purchased in 1894. Over the past year, Don has worked with the SWCD to install 17 water and sediment control basins on both owned and rented land within the Pomme De Terre River Watershed. The Vigers have also been proactively working with the SWCD to ensure the land they own and operate is in compliance with MN's buffer law, through the Otter Tail County Buffer Initiative. Other practices installed over the years include a living snowfence, filter strips, terraces, and additional water and sediment control basins. Congratulations to Don and Lori Viger for your outstanding conservation efforts.
